OEM vs ODM: Which Custom Display Model Fits Your Project?

Whether you are an equipment manufacturer, a systems integrator, or a brand launching its own hardware line, the first decision is how much of the design you bring to the table.

  • OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer): You own the specification. You define the form factor, panel size, brightness, touch, interfaces, and branding, and AplusLCD manufactures the display exactly to your design — including reverse-engineering existing units that are no longer available from the original supplier.
  • ODM (Original Design Manufacturer): You start from one of our proven reference platforms — open frame monitor, panel mount monitor, Android all-in-one display, or panel PC — and we adapt it with your branding, software, and options. ODM is faster and lower-cost because the base design is already validated.

Both models give you direct access to our Shenzhen factory, so your custom display is manufactured, tested, and shipped by the same team that quotes it. Start with our industrial LCD monitor selection guide if you are still deciding which display technology you need.

The OEM/ODM Process: From Spec to Mass Production

Every custom display project at AplusLCD follows the same six-stage process, so you always know what happens next and how long it takes:

  1. Submit your specification (Day 0): Share your requirement — a spec sheet, reference drawing, or sample unit. If you do not have a full specification, our engineers help you define one from your application and environment.
  2. Feasibility & quotation (within 48 hours): Our engineering team reviews mechanical fit, panel availability, interface, and cost, then returns a dated project plan and quotation with transparent tooling and sample pricing.
  3. Sample build (2-3 weeks): For custom OEM builds we produce engineering samples; for ODM platforms, samples ship in 5-10 days from stock-based configurations.
  4. Sample validation: You test the sample in your own application — mechanical fit, readability, touch performance, and reliability. We support iteration until the sample meets your acceptance criteria.
  5. Mass production (2-4 weeks): Approved samples are locked as the golden reference, and production begins with the same materials, processes, and test criteria. Pilot runs of 10-50 units are available before full-scale production.
  6. Shipping & after-sales support: We ship via DHL, FedEx, UPS, or sea freight with full documentation, and provide a product warranty plus long-term component support for equipment lifecycles.

Minimum Order Quantity: No MOQ

AplusLCD works without a minimum order quantity. This is unusual for an LCD factory, and it changes how you can de-risk a project:

  • 1-pc samples: Validate the exact configuration before committing to volume.
  • Pilot runs: Produce 10-50 units for field trials or early customers.
  • Volume scaling: Move to mass production when the product is proven — tooling and firmware costs are quoted up front, with no hidden setup charges.

Certifications: CE, FCC, RoHS & More

Custom displays leave our factory with the compliance documentation your market requires. Standard configurations are certified to:

  • CE — EMC and Low Voltage Directives for the EU market
  • FCC — Part 15 compliance for the US market
  • RoHS — restriction of hazardous substances
  • UL / CB / UKCA — available for specific markets and applications on request

Certification applies to your final configuration, and our team re-validates documentation whenever a configuration changes. If your product needs additional testing, we coordinate the test labs and manage the process for you.

Cooperative Customer Projects

Our OEM/ODM work spans a wide range of industries. Representative engagements include:

  • Outdoor self-service kiosks: 1500-nit sunlight-readable touch displays with optical bonding and wide-temperature panels, deployed in parking and ticketing terminals across North America and Europe.
  • Banking and ATM: Drop-in replacement monitors mechanically and electrically compatible with NCR 5684-5887 and Wincor 5005L ATMs, plus custom banking kiosk displays — no wiring or firmware changes required.
  • Transportation: Brightness-upgraded passenger information and wayfinding displays for transit hubs, with IP65 front protection and anti-glare treatment.
  • Retail and digital signage: Branded Android all-in-one displays and stretched bar LCDs for shelf-edge and menu applications, co-designed with our customers' industrial design teams.
  • Industrial equipment: Custom open frame and panel mount monitors integrated into machinery, with interface and mounting matched to each customer's controller and enclosure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AplusLCD an OEM/ODM display manufacturer or a trading company?
AplusLCD is a direct LCD display manufacturer based in Shenzhen, China. We own our production facility for LCD monitors, panels, and all-in-one displays, operate under an ISO 9001 quality management system, and have been exporting industrial displays since 2008. Because we are factory-direct, you receive manufacturer pricing, direct engineering support, and full traceability on every custom order — with no trading-company markups or third-party quality risk.
What is the difference between OEM and ODM for LCD displays?
In an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) project, you supply the specification — form factor, panel size, brightness, interfaces, branding — and we manufacture the display exactly to your design. In an ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) project, you start from our existing platform or design (open frame, panel mount, Android display, or panel PC) and we adapt it with your custom branding, software, and options. AplusLCD supports both models: OEM for fully bespoke hardware and ODM for faster, lower-cost customization of proven reference designs.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for custom displays?
AplusLCD has no minimum order quantity for most custom display projects. You can order a single sample unit for validation, then scale to volume production. Small pilot runs of 10-50 units are common before mass production, and we keep tooling and firmware costs transparent at the quotation stage so there are no hidden setup charges.
How long does a custom LCD display project take from spec to mass production?
A typical OEM/ODM project runs 4-8 weeks from approved specification to mass production. The timeline breaks down as: spec and feasibility review (1-3 days), sample build (2-3 weeks), sample validation and feedback (1-2 weeks), and mass production (2-4 weeks depending on quantity). Projects built on our existing ODM platforms are faster — sample delivery is usually 5-10 days. Our engineering team gives you a dated project plan at the quotation stage.
Which certifications do AplusLCD custom displays carry?
Standard custom display configurations are certified to CE (EMC and Low Voltage Directives), FCC, and RoHS. Depending on the market and application we also provide UL, CB, and UKCA documentation, and we support customer-requested testing for specialized requirements. Certificates and test reports are supplied with the product documentation on request, and we manage certification re-validation when you change configurations.
Can you customize display size, brightness, touch, and interfaces?
Yes — all four areas are part of our standard customization scope. Panel sizes range from 5" to 86" including non-standard and stretched form factors. Brightness can be specified from 250 nits (standard indoor) up to 4000 nits (sunlight readable) with optical bonding and anti-reflective treatment. Touch options include PCAP, resistive, IR, and surface capacitive, with custom cover glass and bezel finishing. Video interfaces include VGA, HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort, LVDS, eDP, and MIPI, and we match custom pinouts to your existing controller board.
Can AplusLCD manufacture a display to my existing specification or product?
Yes. Send us your specification document, reference drawing, or even a sample unit, and our engineering team will perform a feasibility review — mechanical fit, electrical interface, panel availability, and thermal design. We routinely reverse-engineer and re-manufacture displays for ATMs, industrial machines, and legacy equipment where the original supplier is no longer available. A feasibility review is provided free of charge, typically within 48 hours.
Do you ship custom displays worldwide and can I order samples first?
AplusLCD ships to 50+ countries worldwide via DHL, FedEx, UPS, or sea freight depending on volume. Yes — we strongly recommend ordering 1-3 sample units for validation before mass production. Samples ship in 5-10 days for standard ODM platforms and 2-3 weeks for fully custom OEM builds. We also accept customer-supplied packaging and labeling requirements for volume orders.
